Ben Affleck’s relationship ups and downs have been well documented over the years, and unfortunately, that means that his kids, who are now teenagers, haven’t missed a beat — and they’re not afraid to mock their dad for his past mistakes.
During an appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live! on Thursday, Ben shared how his attempt at giving his kids dating advice ended up backfiring on him when they used his love life against him. To be fair, though, they might have a point…
Ben is a dad of three kids he shares with ex-wife Jennifer Garner: Fin, 20, Violet, 17, and Samuel, 14. Those ages mean that at this stage of Ben’s fatherhood adventure, the sass is real.
While chatting with host Jimmy Kimmel, Ben said that even though he “didn’t imagine I would be the cool dad,” he’s still getting used to the idea that not being the cool dad is his current reality.
“Now, I, like, give advice or try to talk to them like a parent, as you do … but what I’ve found is that now it’s not only one teenager rolling their eyes,” he explained. “I’ll kind of launch into something at the dinner table, and now I catch them giving each other looks. And I realize I’m the caricature in this story. I see them be like, ‘Dad is saying this and that.’”
As many dads do, Ben thought that he could pass along what he’s learned about life over the years to his kids.
“My kids were talking at dinner, and they’ll talk about their friends and the drama and their relationships,” Ben said. “And I have some lived experience, I think, that’s worth sharing … some lessons that I [learned]. These are the kinds of things we give to our children.”
But at that point, he discovered that they’re not that receptive of it (no surprise there, if you’ve ever spoken to a teenager before).
“I said, ‘You know, well, the thing about that relationship there with that person …’ The 17-year-old just turns to me and goes, ‘Oh, like you’re the expert on relationships,’” he said.
Well, Violet might have a point. Not only have they witnessed his divorce from their mom, but also the saga that played out with Jennifer Lopez not all that long ago…
Violet also gave her dad flak for the other areas of his life, too, while she was with him during an outing to a bookstore.
“We’re just browsing around, and there’s some book by a French guy, and it’s called I’m Sorry for Everything, and my kid immediately turns to me, deadpan, and goes, ‘Oh, look, Dad, it’s your autobiography,’” he said.
Has she considered pursuing a career in comedy? Because she’s already very quick witted.
There’s nothing like a well placed snarky comment from a kid to really humble us as parents.
