ORANGEBURG, S.C. (WACH) — A critical issue being talked about on campus Monday night in Orangeburg.
Students, advocates and a survivor, taking on the topic of dating violence at South Carolina State.
Students got a chance to listen to someone who knows about the topic far too well.
“South Carolina ranks 6th in domestic violence nationwide”, said Natalie Purdie, a domestic violence survivor, and advocate.
According to the South Carolina Coalition Against Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault, teen dating violence is more common than you think. 1 in 3 teens will experience abuse by someone they are in a relationship with before they become adults.
“We need to be informed”, said South Carolina State Junior, Demetrius Harris. “There’s a lot of hidden things, that we don’t know about, and things that could be resolved if people just come in and listen.”
“This is a big topic that college students should know about because there are many domestic violence cases that’s going on at campus”, said Alexis Brooks, a Junior on campus.
The issue is starting to see some support.
A proposal is being backed by Senator Katrina Shealy where the plan would allow the same protocol for reporting a boyfriend or girlfriend in a domestic violence situation as it does for people who live under the same roof.
Right now, there is no law in the state that applies to dating violence. South Carolina is one of just a handful of states without one.
