FRANKLIN SPRINGS, Ga. – Another day, another lights-out showing from the 15th-ranked Presbyterian College women’s wrestling team, advancing seven grapplers to NCAA Nationals in two weeks by winning 20 combined matches throughout Friday’s Southeast Regional Tournament.

Cassia Zammit (130), Henlee Haynes (170), and Ella Beam (191) each took second-place ribbons at the event – hosted by Emmanuel – while the trio of Chiara Barbieri (101), Alyssa Mahan (123), and Madeline Kubicki (143) topped the consolation side of their own brackets to each claim a bronze prize.

Head coach Brian Vutianitis – seeing the final stages of his first full season as the program’s director – will send that group (plus Ta’Niya Roberts, who landed a 4th-place nod earlier in the day) to Iowa for the national tourney from March 8-9.

That’s the second-highest number of participants that PC has sent to the next level since the school began its women’s wrestling program in the 2019-20 season.

NOTABLES

– While none were able to go the full distance in a field that included some worthy challengers spread out between eight universities, Presbyterian put together an extremely-balanced tally with 15 victories by either pin or technical.

– Ten of those W’s were achieved by pin, allowing PC’s campaign to continue healthily with over half a dozen entrees into Nationals at Cedar Rapids.

– Mahan became the first Blue Hose in 2024 to reach the threshold of 30 wins, collecting a pair of pins in fewer than 40 seconds each before besting Emmanuel’s Makayla Correa in a tight 8-6 decision to claim the consolation title and 3rd place.

– Zammit and Kubicki follow closely in the wins department at 29 and 28 respectively, spreading out three falls between them to maintain their individual win percentages well above the 70% marker.

– While Beam may have seen her 12-match win streak end in the 191-lb. championship, the sophomore was still able to reach that point with a sub-two-minute pin in round one and a 10-2 decision in the semifinal bout opposite Emory & Henry’s Brittney Reed. She’ll advance to Nationals next month after missing out on the opportunity to do so in ’23 due to injury.

– Barbieri joined Mahan and Kubicki’s company as winners of their last two on Friday, giving Presbyterian the chance to have six separate weight classes represented in the season’s final stop in the Midwest.

– The Blue Hose have conjured up 236 personal wins since November, improving on last year’s final statistics compared to a squad that authored a ninth-place national finish 12 months back.

NEXT UP

– Coach V’s unit will head to Iowa for the third time this season, having also landed in the Hawkeye State for the “Trailblazer Duals” near Thanksgiving and the NWCA National Duals right as the calendar flipped to January.

– They’ve already found a host of success in those aforementioned events, defeating four nationally-ranked opponents in a dual environment which has blended in well with their collection of 28 top-three standings in tournament play.
