Terriers Outlasted by No. 18 Navy, 20-9
ANNAPOLIS, Md. – The Boston University women’s lacrosse team (4-4, 0-2 PL) fell to No. 18 Navy (8-2, 2-1 PL) on Saturday afternoon at Navy-Marine Corps Stadium.
Navy went up early in the opening frame and held BU to two goals in the first half to lead 14-2. After the Mids built to a 19-2 lead, BU was able to score twice in the third quarter. Navy tallied its 20th goal early in the fourth and the Terriers followed with five unanswered goals to bring the final score to Navy 20, BU 9.
Sophomore Leah Hodgins and junior Abby Cotraro each had a hat trick in the game. Senior Tobey Tick, junior Hannah Tillier and freshman Reilly Walsh all found the back of the net once. Cotraro, Walsh and Hodgins all led BU with three points in the game. Junior Raegan Bailey also finished with two points thanks to two assists.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Navy got going early with two goals in the first few minutes.
- A costly Navy turnover helped Tillier get the ball to L. Hodgins who made it a 2-1 game.
- The Mids dominated the rest of the opening frame and went up 7-1.
- Navy made it 10-1 in its favor by the 12:15 mark in the second quarter.
- Bailey was able to find Cotraro who fired off a laser that went in up top to make it 10-2.
- Navy controlled the remainder of the quarter to create a running clock as it went up 14-2 headed into the half.
- The Mids’ momentum followed them into the third quarter as they built to a 19-2 lead.
- BU was able to respond with 2:03 to go in the third when Walsh scored a goal that just barely broke the plane of the goal line.
- That goal was backed up by Tick who, a minute later, took a feed from Walsh to give BU its fourth of the day to close out the third quarter.
- Navy scored its 20th and final goal 27 seconds into the final stanza.
- Cotraro earned two free position shots minutes apart on both of which she scored to cut into Navy’s lead 20-6.
- L. Hodgins became active on the scoresheet again when she scored off a pass from Walsh with 3:23 to go in the game.
- A pass from Bailey found L. Hodgins in front of the net as the sophomore made it a hat trick day with 1:02 left on the clock.
- Tillier added a goal on the free position as the clock ticked down to zero to bring the final score to Navy 20, BU 9.
GAME NOTES
- Navy outshot BU 28-16.
- BU had eight saves compared to Navy’s seven.
- The Terriers went 12-for-15 on the clear while Navy went 18-for-19.
- Navy corralled 20 draw controls to BU’s 20.
- Freshman goalkeeper Natalie Aiosa made eight saves in net.
- Making her first career appearance was freshman goalkeeper Susie McGowan who came in for the fourth quarter.
