10 Virtual Date Night Ideas: Perfect For Long-Distance Relationships

If like me, you’ve been apart from your partner for well over two months now, then you’ll understand that this long-distance stuff really isn’t that easy. Staying at home, for what seems like an eternity, has certainly tested the connections we have with our loved ones, especially our partners. You’ll also have found that it takes a lot of creativity to keep up those things that were considered pretty normal before this all happened. Regular phone calls and never-ending texting does help, but in times like this, it requires a bit more.

Lily Walford, founder of Love with Intelligence, tells us that we should be conscious and deliberate about how we nurture and build our relationships during this time.

“One hour of connected, present conversation can be worth more than six hours of absent-mindedly scrolling through Facebook while on call to each other exchanging occasional thoughts.”

“Thoughtful, romantic attention and some well-earned alone time”

One thing I’ve found to help is planning more purposeful video calls with my boyfriend. We’ve scheduled in things like cocktail making where we ordered a trusty cocktail making kit of Amazon along with all the ingredients to make some of our favourite cocktails and ended up drinking and chatting for a few hours over face time. It was great fun. And although it was over video call, it really did feel as though we were together.

Sex therapist, Mia Sabat, tells us that “Thoughtful, romantic attention and some well-earned alone time will be sure to brighten up both your days and build intimacy between you and your partner, while lending a much-needed break to your routine.”

So, in an attempt to schedule in some more memorable, meaningful video calls, take a look at our 10 fun virtual date night ideas.

A virtual candlelit dinner

Arrange to spend the night chatting over a candlelit dinner. Pour yourself a glass wine, dress up in something special and cook the same meal together over video call. That way, it’ll almost feel like you’re in the same room. And don’t forget to set the mood with a romantic playlist and some candles.

Binge watch the same TV show or film (with popcorn, obvs)

Put some time aside to binge watch the same TV show, ideally something neither of you have seen before. Enjoy a running commentary from each other whilst scoffing a bowl of popcorn all to yourself.

Make cocktails together

Host your very own cocktail making masterclass. Order yourselves a cocktail making kit, along with all the ingredients you need to make your fave cocktails and get mixing. Better yet, why not check out some online cocktail classes? If you really fancy learning some tips and tricks, BarSmarts is an industry-leading online bartender education program you can sign up for. Or if you just want a bit of structured fun, take a look at A Bar Above fo some interactive cocktail quizzes.

Have your morning coffee together

Missing those coffee shop catchups before or after work? Simply video call and enjoy your morning coffee together.

Lily Walford says “During this period, one day can blur into the next, so manage your time and give yourselves things to look forward to. A simple, small thing like a morning coffee together with no electronics, or an evening walk, or a weekly date night can create an oasis of enjoyment in an otherwise difficult month.

Play a game

“Games are fun at any age. Enjoy a virtual pub quiz together, or even try remote-Scrabble, a little competitive spirit will be sure to lift both your moods and will lead to some flirtatious fun” says Mia Sabat.

Try baking together

Schedule some time in at the weekend to do some baking together. Find a cake recipe online that you both like and have a go at making it. Whether it’s a lemon drizzle, carrot cake or boozy mimosa cake you fancy, it’ll be lots of fun to do together. Get someone to judge the end result and give you a score out of ten for all the important things like taste and appearance.

Wine tasting session

For a sophisticated night (or not so sophisticated night), get a few bottles of wine delivered and have a go at becoming a pair of real wine connoisseurs. There’s plenty of wine delivery services for you to choose from.

A themed dinner date

Planning a themed dinner date is a great way of making eating together fun. Throw your very own Mexican fiesta by cooking up some delicious chicken fajitas along with all the trimmings like nachos and dip (get the sombrero and everything).

Order a takeaway together. Or, make a fakeaway!

Enjoy a ‘night in’ together and order your favourite takeaway. Or, if you fancy spicing it up. Why not order each other’s takeaway and leave it as a complete surprise until it arrives? Risky, but pretty amusing.

Make each other a care package

Why not send your partner a cute care package including all the things they love? Give it a theme or simply bung a bunch of their favourite bits all together. If you don’t fancy doing it yourself, there’s plenty of thoughtful hampers online that you can order straight to their front door!

As weird as it might sound, there are actually some positives to come out of this whole situation. Lily Walford tells us that “Having the time apart will give many the chance to really reflect on the things that they may have taken for granted, in life generally or in their partners specifically.”

“This time of limitation will put future freedom into perspective”

Spending time apart from your partner will likely strength your emotional connection. I’ve found that it’s given me the chance to work on some things I may have been putting off, like personal development, fitness, or business. It’s also increased my “zest for life” and given me more to look forward to when reunited with my partner.

The most important thing to remember that this is only temporary. Yes, we’re not really sure when things will return back to normal but it’s good to note that lots of other couples are in the same position. Working through this period together is the best thing any of us can do. And anyway, think about how special it will be when we finally get to see our loved ones?
