An active-duty U.S. Army soldier faces charges in connection with two sexual assaults at North Carolina State University dating back to 2019, one of which may be linked to a university fraternity now under criminal investigation.
Michael Adam Kranzburg, 27, is charged with first-degree kidnapping, assault by strangulation, second-degree forcible sex offense and sexual battery.

Kranzburg was arrested Tuesday by NC State police. On Wednesday, a judge ordered him held without bond at the Wake County Detention Center.
An Army captain, Kranzburg entered active-duty military service in May 2021 and has been stationed at Fort Benning, Georgia, since 2025, according to Fort Benning Public Affairs. Arrest records list his employer as the United States Army.
The charges stem from two separate incidents involving different victims in 2019. Arrest warrants in both cases accuse Kranzburg of forcibly biting the victims’ lips.
According to warrants, Kranzburg is accused of forcing a person to engage in a sexual act in February 2019.
In December 2019, Kranzburg allegedly strangled another victim with his bare hands, causing bruising to the person’s neck. He is also accused of kidnapping, restraining and sexually assaulting that victim.
Both victims were adults at the time of the alleged assaults, according to warrants.
Kranzburg’s address in records from the December 2019 case matches the address of NC State’s Sigma Nu fraternity house. WRAL News reported in 2019 that NC State police were investigating a sexual assault at the fraternity around the same time.
The fraternity was placed on disciplinary probation through April 13, 2020, for a violation involving alcohol.
Sigma Nu is currently under criminal investigation for hazing allegations. As part of that investigation, officers searched the fraternity house last week. The Wake County District Attorney said Kranzburg’s arrest is not connected to the ongoing investigation at the fraternity.
WRAL News has reached out to Sigma Nu, which said Kranzburg’s membership in the fraternity was suspended in 2019, and he was expelled two years later.
NC State confirmed that campus police investigated a reported sexual assault in December 2019, but the Wake County District Attorney’s Office declined to pursue criminal charges at the time.
In October 2026, NC State police received a new report alleging that Kranzburg was responsible for both the December 2019 assault and another in February 2019. The district attorney’s office subsequently decided to pursue charges in both cases.
Kranzburg’s attorney, Margaret Teich, said he denies the allegations.
“These allegations have turned his life around,” Teich said. “He has every reason to come back to court. One minute he’s an Army captain, about to start special forces training with a bright future ahead, about to be engaged, and now here he is – three weeks in Muscogee County jail, and now Wake County jail.”
A spring commencement program shows Kranzburg graduated from NC State in 2021.
Kranzburg’s parents attended Wednesday’s court hearing but declined to comment.
